Ruthie
Ruthie was found as a stray in a backyard over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. She had no microchip, no one looking for her, and unfortunately, she was in significant medical distress.
Ruthie arrived with a very large inguinal hernia that made walking incredibly difficult. She also had obvious eye and skin issues, and even the simple act of moving around caused her to cough. It was clear this little girl had been struggling for quite some time.
We took over Ruthie’s care and brought her to CARES for a thorough medical evaluation. An echocardiogram revealed significant heart disease, including cardiomegaly, a 5/6 heart murmur, and a substantial amount of regurgitation within her heart. Ruthie was started on heart medication to help manage her condition.
An ultrasound revealed another medical challenge: polycystic kidney disease.
Despite everything her little body was facing, Ruthie kept showing us that she wasn't ready to give up.
Once she was medically cleared, Ruthie underwent surgery to be spayed and, most importantly, to repair her enormous inguinal hernia. For a little dog who had spent so long trying to walk with a giant mass between her legs, the difference has been incredible.
Now, Ruthie can walk comfortably. She can move around without that heavy burden between her legs, and she is discovering something she may not have had much of before: simply enjoying being a dog.
Because of her significant heart disease, polycystic kidney disease, and other ongoing medical needs, Ruthie joined our Fospice Program—a place where dogs with serious or life-limiting medical conditions can spend their time surrounded by comfort, love, and the very best care we can give them.
Ruthie may have a lot working against her medically, but she doesn't seem particularly interested in letting that stop her.
She is living life. She is comfortable. She can walk. And most importantly, she is loved. For Ruthie, fospice isn't about counting the days. It's about making every day count. And after everything this little girl has endured, that's exactly what she deserves.
“Always find time to stop and roll around in some grass. ”
How broken is your biscuit on a scale from "slightly crumbled" to "dropped in the gravy"?
When they first found me my biscuit was pretty broken. But they put me back together pretty well.
What flavor biscuit best describes your personality?
As a chi with very few teeth left I don't really identify with biscuits these days.
If your crumbs could talk, what would they say?
I'm a chihuahua. There are no crumbs left when I'm around.
“Please consider giving an old pup a soft place to land! We deserve the dignity of a loving and peaceful end.”
Alittle more about me:
-
Twice a day my foster mom sneaks my medicine into a meatball of food. She thinks I don't know that it is in there. I do. When we go on walks I get tired pretty quickly so she picks me up and carries me in a little sling. As the eldest chihuahua in the house it is my right to be carried around while the others walk.
-
I love walking around in the grass. If I find a really good spot I like to roll around in it. I also like following my people from room to room, sitting in the sunshine outside, taking a nap on the biggest bed, and falling asleep in the sling on walks.
-
I am very demure. Reserved if you will. But one of my quirks is that I like to ask to be put on the couch, then I walk right to the edge just to scare everyone. Just for fun.
-
I think I would like to go to the beach, hang out on a float in a pool, and try In-N-Out.
-
Find a foster home with two moms and some nice dogs. Sleep often.
-
I am very well mannered and follow the rules.
-
When my foster mom gives me the liquid medication I shake my head and splatter red across the floor. I like to do this the most aggressively right after she has mopped.
-
I'm a quality time kind of gal. I really enjoy just hanging out with everyone.
