Jasper
Jasper’s story is one of resilience, love, and the unwavering commitment to giving senior dogs the dignity they deserve.
Back in January 2025, Maison had their eyes on Jasper while he was in the shelter. Before they could rescue him, he was adopted—only to be returned just weeks later after being bullied by the adopter’s other dogs. Heartbroken but determined to help, Maison immediately stepped in to give Jasper the second chance he deserved.
When Jasper arrived, he was skin and bones, suffering from severe dental disease, and clearly in pain. After settling into foster care, he underwent a full medical workup at CARES. His evaluation revealed a heart murmur and mild mitral valve disease, but thankfully nothing that required medication. He was cleared for anesthesia and received a much-needed dental procedure, during which biopsies were taken from several small skin growths.
Just as Jasper began feeling like himself again, the biopsy results brought heartbreaking news, he had hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. An abdominal ultrasound thankfully showed no evidence of additional masses, but because of the unpredictable nature of his diagnosis, Jasper entered our fospice (foster hospice) program, where we believed he likely had only a few months left.
But Jasper had other plans.
A year and a half later, he continues to surprise us. It's clear he has no intention of leaving his beloved fospice mom anytime soon. The bond they share is truly extraordinary, and her unwavering love has carried him through every challenge.
His journey hasn't been without setbacks. After suffering a painful lens luxation, the ophthalmology team did everything they could to save his eye, but unfortunately it had to be removed to relieve his pain. Jasper, however, couldn't have cared less. Losing an eye hasn't slowed him down one bit—he still enjoys life with the same sweet spirit and determination.
As Jasper has aged, he has also developed progressive dementia. Some nights are difficult, requiring his foster mom to wake multiple times to comfort and care for him. She does it all without hesitation, knowing every extra day with Jasper is a gift.
Jasper reminds us that a terminal diagnosis doesn't define how much life is left to live. Sometimes love, comfort, and a safe place to call home can give a dog far more time than anyone expected. Every day Jasper has spent in fospice has been filled with dignity, compassion, and unconditional love—and that's exactly what every senior dog deserves.
“The doctors gave me months. My foster mom gave me a reason to stay.”
How broken is your biscuit on a scale from "slightly crumbled" to "dropped in the gravy"?
Gravy? Honey, I am the gravy.
What flavor biscuit best describes your personality?
Cheddar biscuit—because everyone seems happy when I'm around.
If your crumbs could talk, what would they say?
Love makes even the crummiest biscuit whole
“I thought I was rescued. Turns out, I rescued a heart too.”
Alittle more about me:
-
Following my fospice mom on all our little adventures, enjoying my many snack breaks, and ending every day exactly where I belong—right by her side.
-
Sleeping next to my mommas head
-
My quirks? I have my own special way of making requests: a slow backup, a dramatic back left foot stomp, and some very convincing whiny noises until my fospice mom figures out exactly what I need. I also occasionally get distracted by a wall and need her to come find me. Thankfully, she always does.
-
Keep surprising everyone. Eat all my meals, follow my fospice mom on every adventure, find the coziest nap spots, and spend as many days as possible reminding the world that senior dogs are worth fighting for.
-
The recipe is simple: 4–6 meals a day, extra naps, lots of supervision from my personal assistant (my fospice mom), and just enough confusion to keep everyone on their toes.
-
That pee belongs only outside. My fospice mom calls it a ‘house rule’… I call it a suggestion
-
Making a full production out of everything. If I need something, you’ll know—I’ll slowly back up, stomp my back left foot, and add some dramatic whining for effect..
-
Every moment with my fospice mom. Whether it’s a meal, a nap, a little adventure, or simply knowing she’s nearby, those are the moments that make every day worth it. My favorite thing in the whole world is resting close to her and listening to her heartbeat—it reminds me that I’m safe, I’m loved, and I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
