Gordo

When we first heard about Gordo, we were heartbroken. Shelter volunteers reached out to us, shocked that such a loyal companion had been abandoned by his owner. They described a sweet senior dog who had clearly loved someone deeply, yet somehow found himself alone and confused in a shelter during the most vulnerable time of his life. We knew we had to act fast—there was no way we were going to let Gordo spend his final days in a kennel without the love and comfort he deserved.

We rescued him immediately and brought him to CARES, where he underwent a full medical workup, including bloodwork and X-rays. The diagnosis was devastating: Gordo had a large mass in his lungs and was given a terminal prognosis. Our hearts shattered hearing the news, but even in that difficult moment, we knew one thing for certain—Gordo deserved to be surrounded by kindness, safety, and dignity for however much time he had left.

That was over a year ago.

And somehow, this incredible boy continues to surprise us.

Gordo has now been with Maison Sure for more than one full year, and every day he reminds us that prognoses are not predictions of love, spirit, or joy. While we originally prepared to give him a peaceful final chapter, Gordo had other plans. He has continued to enjoy life in ways that make us smile constantly—asking for walks, soaking up the sunshine, accepting endless cuddles, and greeting his foster mom with the sweetest, most grateful eyes.

He is thriving in fospice with the most incredible foster mom, who has made every moment of his journey special. She sings to him, takes him on gentle adventures, tucks him into cozy beds, and showers him with affection every single day. Because of her, Gordo knows he is cherished, safe, and deeply loved. He is no longer the abandoned dog sitting in a shelter wondering where his person went. He is part of a family.

Gordo’s story is a beautiful reminder of why we do this work. Sometimes we rescue a dog expecting to give them only a little time, and instead they give us something extraordinary—a year of resilience, gratitude, and love that we never could have predicted. Gordo continues to teach us that every day matters, and that no dog is ever “just a hospice case.” He is a beloved soul, and we are endlessly grateful to witness his journey.

Seeing too good is overrated
