Eglantine
When Eglantine was found wandering the streets of Los Angeles, it was clear she had been suffering for a very long time. Severely emaciated and covered in a painful skin infection, her tiny body was fighting to survive. She also carried a large ulcerated mass on her abdomen and was struggling with advanced dental disease that made eating uncomfortable.
Once Eglantine arrived at CARES, our veterinary team immediately began a thorough evaluation. Diagnostic testing revealed that her medical challenges were far greater than what could be seen on the surface. She was diagnosed with multiple mammary masses, a possible abdominal hernia, a heart murmur, cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), spondylosis, a severe skin infection, and a partially collapsed lung lobe.
Before any major surgery could be considered, we needed to stabilize her. Her skin infection had to be treated, and because of her heart condition, she was referred to a cardiologist to determine whether anesthesia would be safe. Thankfully, her echocardiogram showed only mild mitral valve disease, and she was cleared for surgery without the need for heart medication.
Eglantine underwent an extensive procedure that included the removal of numerous mammary masses, repair of her hernia, and a spay surgery. Despite her incredible strength, she did not tolerate anesthesia well, and her much-needed dental procedure could not be performed.
The pathology results brought difficult news. Although all of the masses were completely removed, they were cancerous.
Today, Eglantine is safe, cherished, and surrounded by love. While her diagnosis means her future is uncertain, she will never again know hunger, neglect, or pain without comfort. As a Maison Sûre fospice dog, Eglantine will spend the rest of her days exactly as every dog deserves—wrapped in soft blankets, receiving compassionate care, and knowing that she is loved.
For however much time she has left, Eglantine's story is no longer about suffering. It is about dignity, comfort, and the promise that she will be safe until forever.
